Homegrown mobile operating system BharOS developed by IIT Madras announced
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has officially announced that it has developed a brand new mobile operating system ‘BharOS’. The original mobile operating system was created for nationwide mobile phone users who are said to prioritize privacy. The mobile operating system comes without default apps and automatic updates.
JandK Operations (JandKops), an IIT-Madras-incubated company, has created a home-grown mobile operating system called “BharOS”. Commercially available headphones may have the system installed. India’s newly developed operating system is expected to benefit the country’s 100 million mobile phone users.

The institute says BharOS services are now offered to organizations with strict privacy and security standards, whose users handle sensitive information and who need confidential interactions with restricted mobile applications. These consumers require private 5G networks with access to private cloud services.
BharOS has no default apps (NDA). So consumers are not forced to use programs they may not know or trust. Additionally, this system gives users more control over the permissions that apps on their devices can access, as they can choose to only grant access to certain features or data to trusted apps.

In addition, it was revealed that BharOS was created by JandK Operations Private Limited (JandKops), a Section 8 (Non-Profit) company established by IIT Madras and supported by the IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation. The National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber and Physical Systems of the Indian Department of Science and Technology (DST) provides funding for the Foundation (NMICPS). It aims to put India at par with a select few countries that already have these capabilities.
Access to trusted apps from organization-specific private App Store services is enabled by BharOS (PASS). Access to a carefully selected list of applications that have passed strict security and privacy standards set by organizations is made available through PASS. Users can rest assured that the apps they install are safe to use and have been reviewed for any potential privacy or security issues.
Prof. Speaking at a press conference to announce this Indian mobile operating system, V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras said, “BharOS is a trust-based mobile operating system with a focus on giving users more freedom and control. and the flexibility to choose and use only the apps that suit their needs. This innovative system promises to revolutionize the way users think about security and privacy on their mobile devices.”

Mr. Karthik Ayyar, Director, JandK Operations Pvt Ltd., the start-up that developed this mobile operating system further stated, “In addition, BharOS offers ‘Native Over The Air’ (NOTA) updates that can help keep devices secure. NOTA updates are automatically downloaded and installed on the device without the user having to initiate the process manually. This ensures that the device is always running the latest version of the operating system, which includes the latest security patches and bug fixes. With NDA, PASS and NOTA, BharOS ensures that Indian mobile phones are trusted.”
